Adekunle Gold is stepping into the producer’s chair for The Odyssey, a new documentary that explores the rich, century-long evolution of Yoruba music.

This isn’t your everyday history lesson. It’s a deep tell into how Yoruba music, birthed in the 1930s, has transformed from its traditional roots into the global phenomenon fueling today’s Afrobeats movement.

Executive produced by culture custodian Bobo Omotayo and directed by cinematic storyteller Abba T. Makama, The Odyssey promises a sunny ride journey that connects the past with the present.

In a statement on Wednesday, White House Productions unveiled their mission to spotlight Yoruba music’s iconic genres — from Sakara to Apala, Ajiwere to Fuji, Juju, Highlife, and beyond. The documentary doesn’t just stop there. It’ll explore the profound influence of Christianity and Islam on the art form, bridging the spiritual and the sonic.

“It’s more than just a documentary; it’s a time capsule,” the statement read. “We’re presenting Yoruba music through its legends, its pivotal moments, and the genres that have defined it. With insightful interviews from artistes, band members, promoters, and cultural influencers, we’re curating stories that will resonate both locally and globally.”

The film is split into two definitive eras: pre-colonial and post-colonial. It examines how historical shifts, religious dynamics, and global exposure have shaped Yoruba music into a force that transcends borders.

According to the producers, The Odyssey isn’t just about looking back; it’s about charting the future. “We want this to be a marker in time — a celebration of Yoruba culture that not only highlights its significance but also inspires its growth and relevance for generations to come.”

With its artistic and narrative depth, the project is already buzzing as a cultural gem poised to break into critical and mainstream spaces alike.

The countdown to the unveiling of Yoruba music’s most vibrant stories begins.
