Nigeria’s most capped footballer, Ahmed Musa, has officially retired from the Super Eagles, ending a 15-year career with the national team.

Musa, who also served as the team’s captain, announced his retirement in an emotional post on X (formerly Twitter), thanking Nigerians for their support throughout his career.

“After a lot of thought, I have decided to retire from international football, bringing to an end almost 15 years with the Super Eagles,” he wrote.

He recalled his early days in the national team, when he was called up to the U-20, U-23, and senior teams at the same time. Over his career, Musa earned 111 caps, making him Nigeria’s most capped player.

Among his career highlights were winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and scoring at the FIFA World Cup, including goals against Argentina and Iceland. He also became Nigeria’s highest World Cup goalscorer with four goals.

Speaking about his time as captain, Musa said the role taught him responsibility, patience, and teamwork. “It was never about being in charge, but about helping the team and standing up for the badge,” he said.

Musa thanked teammates, coaches, officials, and fans, adding: “Football gave me a career, but Nigeria gave me meaning. As I step away from international football, I do so with peace and gratitude. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle. Thank you, Nigeria. Thank you for everything.”

His retirement marks the end of an era for Nigerian football as one of its most decorated players steps away from the national team.
