Six-time champions Argentina thrashed Nigeria 4–0 on Wednesday night in Santiago, knocking the Flying Eagles out of the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
The result was sweet revenge for Argentina, who were eliminated by Nigeria at the same stage when they hosted the tournament two years ago.
Alejo Sarco gave Argentina an early lead just two minutes into the game, setting the tone for a one-sided match. Maher Carrizo doubled the advantage in the 23rd minute with a brilliant free-kick after Nasiru Salihu committed a foul at the edge of the box.
Nigeria’s hopes of a comeback were dashed when their appeal for a penalty was waved off, despite Ramirez’s strong challenge on Salihu inside the area.
Winger Oseer Achihi tried to create chances on the left flank, sending in several dangerous crosses, but Argentina’s defence stayed solid.
Just before halftime, Daniel Daga came close to scoring, but his shot was superbly saved by Argentina goalkeeper Santino Barbi, keeping the score at 2–0.
Carrizo grabbed his second goal in the 53rd minute to make it 3–0, before substitute Matheus Silvetti sealed the win with a curling strike in the 66th minute.
The heavy defeat ended Nigeria’s journey in the Round of 16 — a disappointing finish for the two-time runners-up.
