Asherkine Responds to Claims His Viral Canteen Video Was Staged

Nigerian content creator Asherkine has addressed backlash over his viral video in which he flew a woman he met at a canteen in Ogun State to Cape Town, South Africa.

The video, which captured him taking the young lady, identified as Chiamaka Clare, on a post-Valentine’s Day date in Lagos — including a shopping spree, gifts, and dinner — quickly went viral. He later surprised her with a fully paid trip to Cape Town, documenting their outings across the city.

However, online users questioned the authenticity of the content, alleging the encounter was staged. Some argued that Chiamaka’s social media presence, suggesting she may be a model and interior decorator who had recently travelled abroad, did not align with the image of a “canteen worker.”

In a detailed post on X, Asherkine dismissed the claims and defended Chiamaka, urging critics not to judge based on stereotypes.

“I may understand that a bunch of people cannot fathom a young adult living and working in Ogun State, trying to make a way for themselves because she ‘looks too good’ for such a job. This person has a sister living in Lagos, it’s a 2 hr drive and she is 21,” he wrote.

He also clarified that the video was filmed over a week, not in a single day as some viewers assumed. “I understand that most of my videos span through the progression of a day but this video spanned over a week after our first meet. I’m unsure how it looks like a 48hr livestream,” he added.

Asherkine’s response comes amid growing scrutiny of his content, with some questioning whether previous philanthropic videos were similarly fabricated.
