The Nigerian DJ Association (NDJ) has temporarily banned songs by Burna Boy from being played by DJs across Nigeria following reports of a physical altercation between the Afrobeats superstar and DJ Tunez at a private event in Lagos.
In a statement shared on its official Instagram page, the NDJ said the action was necessary to uphold professionalism, equality, and respect within the Nigerian music and entertainment community.
According to the association, videos circulating on social media captured an alleged confrontation between Burna Boy and DJ Tunez at Obi’s residence. Some posts suggested that DJ Tunez was trampled during the incident, though these claims have not been independently verified. The NDJ added that a full investigation is underway.
The statement also reaffirmed the NDJ’s stance on equality and fairness among DJs and artists.
“No one is born hating another because of skin colour, religion, background, or gender. People simply learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can also be taught to love… Here at NigerianDJ, we put all our DJs first, standing firm on ‘ALL DJs are EQUAL,’ offering transparent and personal service to help our DJs and clients achieve their goals, both at home 🇳🇬 and in the diaspora 🌎,” the NDJ said.
The association warned that discrimination, prejudice, or mistreatment within the DJ community would not be tolerated and urged DJs to maintain professionalism at all events.
In a bold measure, the NDJ stated:
“🚨 Burna Boy music is temporarily out of any of our DJs’ playlists until further notice. Our team will carry out a proper investigation on last night’s incident involving one of our own, DJ Tunez. We urge DJs in Nigeria to be vigilant and respectful toward any individual artist at their events. Respect among DJs is essential.”
The NDJ also noted that the incident highlights broader concerns about professionalism in the music industry, emphasizing the need for tolerance and ethical conduct.
No official response has yet been received from Burna Boy’s management, and the NDJ did not provide a timeline for the conclusion of its probe.
The NDJ describes itself as the governing body for DJs in Nigeria, responsible for managing DJ operations, providing professional guidance, and ensuring the equitable treatment of DJs nationwide.
