The animated series Iyanu, inspired by Nigerian culture and mythology, will begin streaming across Africa on June 13.

The show, created by Nigerian writer Roye Okupe and produced by Lion Forge Entertainment, is based on his graphic novel Iyanu: Child of Wonder. It will be available to viewers in 44 African countries via Showmax.

Okupe, who grew up in Lagos, said he was inspired by the superhero shows he watched as a child and wanted to create something that reflected African stories.

“One of the reasons I started YouNeek Studios and created Iyanu is because I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, watching superhero stories on DStv,” Okupe said. “To now see Iyanu launching on Showmax across 44 African countries is truly a full-circle moment.”

“I’m beyond thrilled that kids, adults, and families across the continent will get to see a superhero who looks, sounds, and feels like them,” he added. “I can’t wait for audiences throughout Africa to experience the magic and wonder of Iyanu.”

The show first premiered in the United States on Cartoon Network in April 2025. Since then, it has received strong reviews and ranked number one on the channel. It also entered the top 10 list of kids’ and family shows on Max.

Iyanu follows the journey of a teenage orphan who learns Yoruba history and the ancient arts with her close friends, Biyi and Toye.

The voice cast features top Nigerian actors, including Serah Johnson as Iyanu, alongside Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Stella Damasus, Blossom Chukwujekwu, and Shaffy Bello.
