Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman says his decision to play for Nigeria instead of England was one of the biggest turning points in his football career.
In an interview with ARISE TV, the Atalanta star described the switch as life-changing.
“Without a doubt, it changed my career and my life,” he said. “This is home for me. I enjoy it here. I’m the son of the soil.”
Born in London, Lookman represented England at youth level before committing to Nigeria. Since then, his career has taken a sharp upward turn.
The 27-year-old made history in May by scoring a hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, helping Atalanta win their first European trophy.
Now one of Europe’s top forwards, Lookman said his rise is due to self-belief, discipline, and hard work.
“It’s about working hard every single day. That builds confidence. Eventually, your effort pays off,” he said.
He also spoke about overcoming low points, including missing a penalty while on loan at Fulham.
“Every day, I try to improve myself — on and off the pitch. That mindset has really helped me,” he added.
Lookman was recently crowned the 2024 CAF African Footballer of the Year, a moment he described as special.
“It’s an amazing feeling. It’s a privilege. I take it with real pride,” he said. “Some of the greatest players in football have won this award. To be part of that list is a blessing.”
He returned to Lagos to present the award to President Bola Tinubu and Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, calling it a meaningful homecoming.
The Lagos governor praised Lookman as a symbol of the “Greater Lagos Rising” and a role model for Nigerian youths.
The player also visited Phase 2, the community where he lived with his grandmother and father.
“It was important to bring this award back home,” Lookman said. “I’ve been holding it close all day. Presenting it to the President meant a lot.”
Asked if he’d consider retirement, Lookman responded with a smile, “Definitely not. Retirement is not even close. There’s still a long journey ahead.”
Top Premier League clubs including Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United — are reportedly interested in signing him.
Atalanta has set a €50 million price tag on the in-form striker, who is now seen as one of the most valuable forwards in European football.
