Como sack Dele Alli after red card nightmare

Former England midfielder Dele Alli has been released by Serie A club Como after making just one appearance for the team.

The 29-year-old joined the Italian side in January on an 18-month deal but failed to impress. His only match came in March, when he came on as a substitute in the 81st minute against AC Milan and was sent off in stoppage time for a rough challenge on Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

That debut turned out to be his last game for Como. Manager Cesc Fabregas left him out of his plans for the new season, leading to the decision to terminate his contract.

In a statement, the club said: “Como and Dele Alli have agreed to a mutual termination of his contract. Dele is keen to secure regular playing opportunities and, as he was not part of the club’s immediate plans, both parties felt it was the right decision to part ways.”

Alli, once one of the brightest young stars in English football, has struggled to revive his career in recent years. He was released by Everton in June 2024 before moving to Italy, but his time there has now also ended abruptly.

With his future now uncertain, the former Tottenham midfielder faces another battle to find a new club and restart his career.
