Judge Arun Subramanian, the man overseeing Sean “Diddy” Combs’ high-profile trial, is known not just for his legal expertise but also for his humility and kindness. Before becoming a federal judge, Subramanian worked as a civil attorney and left a lasting impression on the people he represented.

One such example is Mary and Joel Rich, whose son Seth Rich was falsely linked to a major political scandal. The couple sued Fox News over the claim, and Subramanian was part of their legal team. After the case was settled, the Riches invited their lawyers to a dinner in New York to say thank you. Subramanian attended—but surprised them by paying the full bill himself. They called the gesture generous and said it showed his true character.

“He treated us like family,” Mary Rich said. “I hope to give him a big hug one day.”

Now, Subramanian is in the spotlight again as he leads the Diddy trial, which involves serious charges such as sex trafficking and racketeering. Though the case is attracting national attention, the judge is still seen walking to court wearing headphones, blending in like any other commuter.

People who know him describe him as calm, grounded, and approachable. He’s known to enjoy karaoke and even buys his judge’s robes online.

Subramanian, born in Pittsburgh to immigrant parents, often speaks about the importance of family. He mentioned them all during his Senate confirmation hearing in 2022.

Attorney Arick Fudali, who represents some of the accusers in the Diddy case, said the trial will largely be shaped by what evidence the judge allows in court. That means Subramanian’s decisions could play a major role in how the trial unfolds.

The Diddy trial is already one of the most closely watched court cases of the year—and Judge Subramanian's reputation for fairness and humility is sure to remain in focus as it continues.
