Nigerian-British artist Darkoo has stirred major conversation after revealing the steep financial demands required to release music in today’s industry.
According to the singer, dropping a single now comes with a price tag of up to $45,000 (approximately ₦60 million), a figure she says many upcoming artists simply cannot afford.
Darkoo explained that the cost goes far beyond just recording music. A significant portion is spent on visuals and promotion, noting that about $15,000 can go into producing a music video, while another $20,000 is typically allocated to marketing and promotional campaigns. Additional expenses include paying influencers and bloggers across different countries to push the song.
Her statement highlights how the music industry has evolved into a highly commercial space, where talent alone is often not enough without strong financial backing.
The revelation has since sparked widespread debate online, especially among independent and emerging artists, many of whom see the rising costs as a major barrier to breaking into the mainstream.
