Former France international Emmanuel Petit has weighed in on the eternal debate between football icons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, pointing out a fundamental tactical and cultural divide between their respective national teams. Speaking on the latest episode of the How To Win The World Cup podcast on talkSPORT, the 1998 World Cup winner argued that the contrast in team chemistry will define both players’ legacies at the 2026 tournament.
According to Petit, the defining difference between the two legendary captains lies entirely in the attitude and willingness of their teammates on the pitch. While the Argentine squad unites seamlessly to elevate Messi, Petit believes the Portuguese players deliberately do not play to support Ronaldo.
“Argentina… the players they play for Messi. I think the Portuguese players, they don’t play for Cristiano Ronaldo, and this is for me the main difference with Argentina and Messi. So, it’s up to Martinez, the manager, to manage that.”Emmanuel Petit said.
Pressure mounts on Roberto Martinez to resolve team dynamic
Petit emphasized that the fractured dynamic within the Portuguese camp has created an uncomfortable environment, placing the ultimate burden of responsibility on head coach Roberto Martinez. He noted that it is strictly up to the manager to manage the tension, address Ronaldo’s standing with his teammates, and salvage Portugal’s tactical cohesion before the tournament progresses any further.
The stark contrast in their team environments is already reflecting directly in the tournament statistics. As the 2026 World Cup group stage continues, Messi has already hit the ground running with three goals to his name for Argentina, whereas a frustrated Ronaldo is still searching for his first goal of the campaign.
