Newcastle United got their first win of the new Premier League season after beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Nick Woltemade, Newcastle’s £65 million signing, scored the only goal in the 29th minute with a strong header from Jacob Murphy’s cross. The Magpies then defended well to keep Wolves out and hold on for the three points.

It was an important win for Eddie Howe’s team, who have struggled for form since selling Alexander Isak to Liverpool on deadline day for £125 million.

In other games, Arsenal went top of the table with a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest in Ange Postecoglou’s first match in charge. Martin Zubimendi scored twice, with Viktor Gyokeres also on target.

Bournemouth are third after beating Brighton 2-1. Antoine Semenyo scored a late penalty after Kaoru Mitoma had cancelled out Alex Scott’s opener.

Aston Villa drew 0-0 with Everton, Leeds lost 1-0 at Fulham thanks to a last-minute own goal by Gabriel Gudmundsson, and Sunderland drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace.

Tottenham face West Ham later, while Chelsea can move top if they beat Brentford in Saturday’s evening kick-off.
