In a revealing conversation with Roger Federer, Burna Boy has ignited debate after stating that although Fela Anikulapo Kuti had a “big influence” on his life, he would not call him an inspiration.

He explained that the first album he ever got was by R&B artist Joe, given to him at age 10, and that his true musical direction was shaped by artists like Lil Wayne and Tupac.

While his grandfather, Benson Idonije also Fela’s first manager introduced him to Afrobeat via Fela, Burna Boy emphasized that he did not let Fela’s legacy dictate his creative path.

His statement has stirred reactions, especially given that he has sampled Fela’s works in hits like Ye, My Money, My Baby, and Gbona.
