The Federal Government has lauded Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele for the istoric box office success of her latest movie, Behind the Scenes.
In a statement on its X handle on Monday, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) described the achievement as a major boost for Nigeria’s creative industry and evidence of the growing global appeal of Nigerian storytelling.
According to the agency, Behind the Scenes has crossed ₦2.1 billion at the Nigerian box office, becoming the first Nollywood film to surpass the ₦2 billion mark. The movie has also performed well internationally, grossing over $111,256 in Canada and $190,249 across North America.
“From Lagos to Toronto, from cinemas in Abuja to theatres overseas, this movie had everyone locked in,” the statement read.
The NOA further noted that Akindele is the first filmmaker to top the African box office for three consecutive years, a feat that underscores the expanding reach and influence of Nigerian cinema.
The government’s commendation coincides with widespread acclaim for the 2025 release, which continues to dominate local markets while demonstrating Nollywood’s growing footprint on the international stage.
