FIFA President blasts Senegal over ‘unacceptable scenes’ at AFCON final

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has launched a scathing attack on Senegal after their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final victory was overshadowed by what he called “unacceptable scenes” following a dramatic late penalty decision.

Sunday’s final against host nation Morocco spiralled into chaos when several Senegal players and officials walked off the pitch in protest after a stoppage-time penalty was awarded to Morocco, bringing the match to a halt for nearly 20 minutes.

In a strongly-worded statement, Infantino condemned the conduct of the Senegal team and supporters, insisting such behaviour has no place in football.

“It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner,” Infantino said.
“Violence and disorder can never be tolerated in our sport.”

The flashpoint came in the dying moments of normal time with the score locked at 0-0, when referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a penalty following a VAR review for a foul on Brahim Díaz.

Furious Senegal players abandoned the pitch, while chaos erupted in the stands as fans attempted to enter the field of play and clashed with security officials.

Only Sadio Mané remained on the pitch, urging his team-mates to return and allow the match to continue.

After a lengthy delay, Díaz stepped up — but his audacious Panenka penalty was easily saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, forcing the match into extra time.

Senegal eventually claimed the title when Pape Gueye fired home a stunning winner, sealing a 1-0 victory and a second AFCON crown.

Despite congratulating Morocco on hosting a “fantastic tournament”, Infantino warned that the scenes risk damaging African football’s global image.

“Teams must respect the decisions of match officials,” he said.
“Anything less puts the very essence of football at risk.”

Infantino added that the incident sent the wrong message to fans around the world and confirmed he expects CAF’s disciplinary bodies to take action.

“The ugly scenes we witnessed must never be repeated,” he said.
