Nigerian singer‐songwriter Fola has candidly shared the emotional reality behind his rise to stardom.

In a conversation with Spotify’s Radar, he revealed that life before fame was quiet — when he attended school, no one paid much attention to him. But now, “just one year down the line,” things have changed so dramatically that he can’t even enter his former campus without being recognised.

Reflecting on his journey, Fola said:

“Music matters so much to me because it is such an amazing thing that you can speak to and touch someone without even meeting them in person… Before, if I went to the campus, people didn’t even recognise my presence. But just one year down the line, I can’t even enter school anymore because of fame.”

He also recalled investing all his money into a music project in 2022 that didn’t take off a moment of vulnerability that taught him the stakes of his craft.

Now, as his profile rises, Fola faces the paradox of gaining recognition but losing the anonymity he once had.
