Popular Nigerian gospel singer, Bunmi Akinnanu, best known for her soul-lifting hit “Omije Ojumi,” is dead.

9jaonline Magazine gathered that the singer passed away on Tuesday evening, according to a close source to the family.

As at the time of filing this report, the Akinnanu family is yet to release an official statement on the circumstances surrounding her death. More details are expected in the coming days.

Her death comes months after the gospel artiste openly sought prayers from Nigerians while battling a serious leg ailment.

Recall that in late 2025, a video of Akinnanu during a church service at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan, Oyo State, surfaced online. In the footage, the singer was seen seated with one leg stretched out as prayers were offered for her healing.

The video triggered widespread concern after the cleric leading the service revealed that Akinnanu had been suffering from persistent bleeding in her leg, a revelation that sparked intense prayer sessions for her recovery.

The clip went viral across social media, with fans, colleagues and well-wishers flooding the internet with messages of support and organising prayer chains for the singer.

The exact medical condition affecting her leg was never officially disclosed.

Bunmi Akinnanu began her music journey at the age of 10 and later resigned from a banking job to fully embrace gospel music.

She shot into the limelight with “Omije Ojumi,” a deeply emotional song that struck a chord with many Nigerians, and went on to release several other gospel tracks, earning her a respected place in the Nigerian gospel music scene.
