I Wasn’t Happy Being African — Tiwa Savage Opens Up About Identity Struggles

Award-winning singer Tiwa Savage revealed at the recent “Unstoppable Africans” event that she once felt averse to being African during her upbringing in London.  

She shared:

“I remember growing up in London and I was not happy being African. But now I’m so proud because of how big Afrobeats is growing.”  

Tiwa highlighted how the global rise of the Afrobeats genre has reshaped her perception of her roots and heritage:

“Afrobeats is the fastest-growing genre in the world … We are Africans and we are unstoppable.”  

She noted the cultural shift she experienced: once distancing herself from her identity, she now embraces and celebrates it recognising the influence of her platform and the pride in seeing others uplifted by her journey.
