Legendary Super Eagles captain Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has dismissed rumours that he intends to run for president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The speculation came after Nigeria’s disappointing 1-1 draw with South Africa in Tuesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, which intensified calls for the resignation of the NFF board led by Ibrahim Gusau. Reports suggested Okocha was considering a bid for the top NFF post.
But Okocha, speaking from Kigali where he is attending SPORTSBIZAFRICA, denied the claims.
“Hello everyone, I just want to use this opportunity to say that the news and posts that have been circulating are false,” he said. “I have not spoken to anyone about Nigerian football or any interest in becoming NFF president. I’m currently focused on SPORTSBIZAFRICA.”
He urged those spreading the rumours to stop and offered words of encouragement to Nigerians frustrated with the team’s performance.
“I appreciate my people and understand the frustration we’re going through, but be rest assured that better days are ahead. Let’s keep believing. I know it is not easy, but we are all in it together. God bless and please let’s stay strong,” Okocha added.
Nigeria now risks missing another FIFA World Cup after drawing against Group C leaders South Africa. The Super Eagles sit on 11 points, six behind Bafana Bafana, with only two matches remaining.
The team will return in October for matchday 9 and 10 fixtures against Lesotho and Benin Republic.
