A California judge has approved rapper Lil Nas X for entry into a mental health diversion programme following his arrest last August for allegedly attacking police officers while wandering nearly naked through the streets of Los Angeles.

During a hearing on Monday, the judge informed Lil Nas X that the assault charges could be dismissed if he successfully completes the programme and adheres to all laws over the next two years.

The rapper, diagnosed with bipolar disorder following the incident, expressed gratitude for the ruling, telling Rolling Stone, “I’m thankful. Just very thankful. It could have been much worse.”

Lil Nas X was arrested late at night on Ventura Boulevard, reportedly wearing only underpants and cowboy boots, in the incident that led to his mental health evaluation and subsequent participation in the diversion programme.
