In a shocking act of courtroom violence on Monday, a presiding judge was fatally shot during a hearing on a property dispute, and two plaintiffs involved in the case were wounded.
According to police statements, the gunman—identified by his initials E. Sh., aged about 30—was one of the parties to the case. During the hearing, he allegedly pulled out a revolver and opened fire inside the courtroom. The presiding judge, Astrit Kalaja, was struck and later died while being transported to hospital.
The two others hit in the attack were a father and son, both plaintiffs in the property dispute. Their injuries have been described by authorities as non–life-threatening, and they are reportedly in stable condition.
After the shooting, the assailant attempted to flee the courtroom but was later arrested. The firearm used—a revolver—is said to have been recovered.
The court case being heard is believed to have revolved around a property dispute, which often can be emotionally and financially fraught. The motive has not yet been fully established by investigators. Albania’s Prime Minister, Edi Rama, condemned the shooting as a “tragic event” and called for tougher penalties for firearms offenses. President Bajram Begaj also issued a statement, labeling the attack as “a terrible attack on the entire justice system.”
The incident has sparked urgent calls for reviewing courtroom security protocols and stricter controls over access to firearms in judicial settings. According to data, 213 firearm-related incidents were recorded in Albania during the first half of 2025.
This deadly attack inside a courtroom not only signals a severe breach of judicial security, but also raises deeper concerns about
Security in court facilities
How did the assailant bring a weapon into a supposedly secure courtroom? Investigations will likely focus on gaps in screening, surveillance, and internal security protocols.
Protection for judicial officers
Judges routinely preside over disputes that provoke strong reactions; this incident underscores the need for protective measures—perhaps bodyguards or safe zones—especially in high-stake or volatile cases.
Judicial and political fallout
The murder of a judge during a hearing is a direct attack on the authority and integrity of the judiciary. There may be calls for reforms or legislative actions to boost protections, sentencing, and deterrence.
Effect on public confidence
For citizens and litigants, the safety and fairness of the justice system are foundational. Such a violent act risks eroding trust in courts as neutral, safe venues for resolving disputes.
Legal consequences for the perpetrator
The accused will likely face charges of murder, attempted murder, and illegal firearms possession, among others. His defense, motive, and potential sentencing will draw close national and international attention.
