Harry Kane scored two goals as Bayern Munich set a new European record of 14 straight wins to start a season after beating Cologne 4–1 in the German Cup on Wednesday night.
Kane’s first goal was a stunning curling strike on the turn, and his second — a header after the break — took his tally to 22 goals in 14 matches this season. Luis Diaz and Michael Olise also found the net for Bayern, who have now broken the 1992–93 record of 13 consecutive wins held by Fabio Capello’s AC Milan.
Cologne had briefly shocked Bayern when Ragnar Ache put them ahead — the first time the German champions have trailed all season — but Thomas Tuchel’s men quickly took control and never looked back.
The England captain has been in sensational form, scoring in 12 of Bayern’s 14 games, including two hat-tricks and six braces during their record-breaking run.
In another German Cup match, Bayer Leverkusen left it late to beat 10-man Paderborn 4–2 after extra time. Nineteen-year-old Ibrahim Maza scored deep into extra time to save Leverkusen from a penalty shootout, before Aleix Garcia added a fourth.
Earlier, Alejandro Grimaldo’s free-kick put Leverkusen ahead, but Paderborn equalised through Stefano Marino and later took a shock 2–1 lead in extra time via Sven Michel. Former Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah made it 2–2 before Leverkusen completed the comeback.
Cup holders Stuttgart also advanced with a 2–0 win at Mainz, thanks to goals from Luca Jaquez and captain Atakan Karazor.
Meanwhile, former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius endured a nightmare outing as Schalke were thrashed 4–0 by Darmstadt.
Other winners on the night included Freiburg, Magdeburg, and Kaiserslautern, who join Borussia Dortmund, Hertha Berlin, RB Leipzig, Hamburg, St. Pauli, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Holstein Kiel, and Bochum in the last 16 of the competition.
