Major League Soccer (MLS) has issued an undisclosed fine to Inter Miami star Lionel Messi for violating league policy regarding hands to the face, head, or neck of an opponent. The sanction stems from a late-game exchange with Philadelphia Union midfielder Quinn Sullivan during Wednesday’s 2-2 draw at Subaru Park.
Disciplinary panel issues fines and overturns red card
The incident occurred deep in stoppage time when Messi exchanged words with Sullivan near midfield and struck the back of the midfielder’s neck. Referee Filip Dujic had his back turned during the physical interaction and did not issue a booking on the pitch. Upon post-match review, the league’s disciplinary committee levied retrospective fines against both Messi and teammate Ian Fray who was penalized for grabbing Sullivan’s neck area during a separate stoppage-time tussle.
The fiery finish also saw red cards shown to Inter Miami’s Yannick Bright and 16-year-old Philadelphia substitute Cavan Sullivan. However, MLS confirmed that its Independent Review Panel unanimously voted to overturn Cavan Sullivan’s red card and one-match suspension following a successful appeal by Philadelphia.
