Liverpool left it late once again as captain Virgil van Dijk scored a stoppage-time winner in their 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Arne Slot’s men had looked in control after going 2-0 up, but Atletico fought back to level the game. Just when it seemed the points would be shared, Van Dijk rose highest in the 92nd minute to head home and seal another dramatic win.
The result continues Liverpool’s remarkable run of late goals this season. In five matches so far, they have scored decisive winners in the 83rd, 88th, 95th, 100th, and now 92nd minute.
The game wasn’t short of drama. Atletico coach Diego Simeone, known for his fiery touchline behaviour, was sent off after clashing with celebrating Liverpool fans following Van Dijk’s goal.
Liverpool’s new signings, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, also gave glimpses of their potential as they linked up well in attack. Though Wirtz missed a big chance after rounding goalkeeper Jan Oblak, the Anfield crowd cheered the partnership as a sign of things to come.
Despite conceding twice, Slot will be pleased with his team’s fight and character. For Atletico, Simeone’s sending-off capped a frustrating night that slipped away in the final moments.
Liverpool now turn their focus back to the Premier League as they continue their push for silverware at home and in Europe.
