Liverpool Football Club has announced it will no longer use the number 20 shirt worn by Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident alongside his brother, Andre Silva.

The club said this decision was made after consulting with Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, and his family. They described it as a way to honour Jota’s memory and his impact on the club and fans.

Jota, 28, joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020. He played 182 games and scored 65 goals. He helped the team win the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022, and the League Cup again in 2024. He was also part of the team that won the Premier League in 2025.

Liverpool said the number 20 shirt will no longer be used at any level, including the women’s team and the academy.

“This is a unique tribute to a very special person,” said Michael Edwards, CEO of football at Fenway Sports Group. “We felt it was important to involve his family in this decision. By retiring his number, we’re making it eternal.”

Jota and his brother died in a car crash on July 3. Reports say their car, a Lamborghini, crashed after a tyre burst while trying to overtake another vehicle. Jota had just undergone minor surgery and was advised not to fly, so he was driving back to Liverpool for pre-season.

Their funeral took place last Saturday in their hometown of Gondomar, Portugal, with Liverpool sending a large delegation to attend.

Jota’s wife, Rute, who recently married him and shares three children with him, visited Anfield along with the Liverpool squad to pay tribute. She was seen carrying flowers and reading messages left by fans.

Liverpool will play their first match since Jota’s death in a friendly against Preston North End on Sunday. A minute of silence will be held before kickoff, and more tributes are expected during the game.
