Liverpool will open their Premier League title defence tonight against Bournemouth in what is set to be an emotional night at Anfield, as the club honours the late Diogo Jota.
The Portuguese forward and his brother, Andre Silva, died in a road accident in July. Jota’s wife, children, and family will be in attendance for the tribute before kick-off.
Manager Arne Slot, in his programme notes, said the occasion would be “very emotional” and assured the family of the club’s continued love and support.
“This is the first league game since we lost Diogo and Andre,” Slot said. “The tributes across the football world have been truly special. Tonight, we will come together to honour them once more.”
Liverpool have also unveiled a ‘Forever 20’ shirt in Jota’s memory, with all profits going to the LFC Foundation to support a grassroots football programme in his name. The club has retired the No. 20 shirt across all levels, including LFC Women and the Academy.
On the pitch, Slot warned against underestimating Bournemouth, who finished ninth last season, and praised new signings Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez.
“We are better in creating chances than last season, but we must improve defensively,” he said. “Your support tonight will be crucial as we begin our title defence.”
