Ademola Lookman overcame injury doubts to help Atalanta secure a crucial 2-1 win over Roma on Monday night, sealing their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
The Nigerian forward had been uncertain to play after struggling with an Achilles issue during training on Friday. However, he started the game in Bergamo and scored the opening goal.
Roma equalised through Bryan Cristante, but substitute Ibrahim Sulemana netted the winning goal, confirming Atalanta’s third-place finish in Serie A and their qualification for Europe’s top competition.
Speaking to DAZN after the match, Lookman said, “It’s a great feeling. We knew how important this match was. We gave a performance that deserved the win. I always try to be available and give my best.”
Despite Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini planning early celebrations, Lookman said the team is staying focused.
“There’s still another game on Sunday. Tonight is a night to enjoy, but we want to finish the season strong,” he added.
Sulemana, who has only played 143 minutes across seven league games this season, made a big impact coming off the bench.
“I don’t have much to say—just happy,” the 21-year-old said. “This is why we work hard. The coach told me to press and support the attack, and I got the goal. We’re focused on ourselves, not others.”
Sulemana will also celebrate his 22nd birthday next week with an unforgettable moment already under his belt.
