Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman will line up against Arsenal in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League semi-finals after Atlético Madrid and the Premier League side confirmed their places in the last four.
Atlético booked their semi-final spot for the first time since the 2016/17 season, edging past Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate despite a 2-1 second-leg defeat on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Arsenal progressed with a 1-0 aggregate win over Sporting CP on Wednesday, setting up a compelling semi-final clash.
Lookman played a decisive role in Atlético’s quarter-final victory, scoring in the 31st minute of the second leg after Barcelona had fought back from a two-goal deficit through Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres. His strike restored Atlético’s aggregate advantage, ultimately securing their passage to the semi-finals.
The Nigerian international, who joined Atlético from Atalanta during the winter transfer window, has quickly established himself as a key figure, contributing 10 goals across all competitions since his arrival.
Looking ahead to the semi-final, Lookman acknowledged the quality of Arsenal but insisted that Atlético are ready for the challenge.
“Another strong team, another top team,” he said.
“When you’re in the semi-finals of the Champions League, whoever you get will be tough. It’s a big occasion and one we’re really looking forward to.”
His goal against Barcelona also made him one of the few Nigerians to score in a Champions League quarter-final, joining the likes of Obafemi Martins, Samuel Chukwueze, and Victor Osimhen.
Atlético manager Diego Simeone lauded Lookman’s influence on the team, highlighting his unique qualities and growing importance.
“Since I’ve been at the club, we never had players with those features,” Simeone said.
“He’s still evolving, improving defensively, which makes him even more important. Offensively, he’s brilliant. Very courageous, excellent one-on-one, and he gives pace to the team when on the ball.”
Despite the praise, Simeone believes Lookman still has more to offer.
“We need more from him. He has more in his tank. We’ve seen it in Nigeria,” he added.
With six goals already for Atlético and his influence continuing to grow, Lookman heads into a high-stakes semi-final against Arsenal with the chance to further cement his role among the club’s key players as they pursue European glory.
