Manchester United finally broke their Anfield curse with a 2–1 victory over Liverpool, thanks to a towering Harry Maguire header that sealed a memorable win — their first at the famous ground in nearly ten years

United struck early through Bryan Mbeumo, who latched onto Amad Diallo’s clever pass in the second minute to stun the home crowd. The visitors controlled much of the opening exchanges, keeping Liverpool on the back foot.

The Reds found a lifeline in the 78th minute, when Cody Gakpo finished from close range after Federico Chiesa’s driven cross caused chaos in the box. The equaliser reignited Anfield’s energy — but only briefly.

Six minutes later, Bruno Fernandes delivered a looping cross from a corner that met Maguire’s determined run. The defender powered a header into the far corner past Giorgi Mamardashvili, sending United’s bench into wild celebration.

BBC’s John Murray summed it up perfectly: “That could be the goal that sees Manchester United win at Anfield for the first time in almost a decade.”

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock was full of praise: “You can’t leave Maguire free like that. It’s a textbook header — down, powerful, and unstoppable.”

Liverpool pushed for a late response, but Gakpo squandered a golden chance, heading wide from Jeremie Frimpong’s cross in the dying moments.

The result marks a huge statement for Rúben Amorim’s side — a resilient, hard-fought win that ends a long Anfield drought and lifts United’s confidence heading deeper into the Premier League campaign.
