Popular Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson Okojie faces heavy criticism online following her recent endorsement deal with a new menstrual care brand called Girls Tag. The celebrity unveiled the brand alongside her daughter, Purity Okojie, as official brand ambassadors during a recent launch event. However, the announcement triggered immediate outrage when the public discovered that the period care pack costs twenty-five thousand Naira.

Shortly after the initial unveiling, the company also announced actress Regina Daniels as another major ambassador for the product line. This high-profile marketing strategy did not sit well with many Nigerians who view the price point as insensitive to economic realities. Millions of women across the country currently struggle to purchase basic sanitary pads due to severe inflation and rising poverty levels.

Public outrage over elite target marketing


Many social media users described the expensive product as an unnecessary luxury that excludes the average Nigerian girl. Critics argued that menstruation is a basic biological necessity that should remain affordable and accessible to every female citizen. Some commentators stated that the high price tag forces vulnerable young girls to resort to unhygienic alternatives or miss school entirely.

However, a few individuals defended the business decision by stating that the premium packaging targets a specific wealthy demographic. They argued that private companies have the right to set prices based on their production costs rather than philanthropy. Despite these defenses, the dominant public opinion remains highly critical of celebrities who promote unaffordable essential goods during an economic crisis.
