A mother’s single act of violence has left a Florida community shattered and a family grieving.

Naikishia L. Williams, 32, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse, after allegedly punching her seven-year-old daughter, Nia, so hard in the stomach that it cost the child her life.

The heartbreaking incident happened on April 28, 2025, when emergency services responded to a distress call about an unresponsive child at a home on West 15th Street, Riviera Beach, Florida. By the time they arrived, Nia had already suffered fatal internal injuries. She was rushed to St. Mary’s Medical Centre, but was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy revealed the young girl died from blunt force trauma to the abdomen, with a torn liver and internal bleeding cited in the coroner’s report. Investigators say it was just one devastating blow — a punch to the stomach — that ended her life.

Williams, who was arrested two months after the incident following a police investigation, appeared in court last Friday. A judge ruled that she be held without bail.

Those who knew Nia have been left devastated. Her former caretaker, Rebecca Finley, described her as “a golden child” and “a little fashionista who loved to smile.”

“She lit up any room she entered. She didn’t deserve this,” Finley said emotionally, standing beside Nia’s godmother, Whytni Walker.

“We’ll never hear her laugh again. We’ll never see her smile. She’s gone,” Walker added tearfully.

Police say multiple caregivers had previously raised concerns about the safety of the child, but no intervention came in time. Williams’ failure to file her usual daily work report on the day of the incident is what raised suspicion, eventually prompting the involvement of West Palm Beach police.

Riviera Beach Police Chief Michael Coleman said the entire community had been affected by the tragedy.

“The death of an innocent child is never normal. The trauma of this will stay with us for a long time,” Coleman said.

Williams faces the possibility of life imprisonment or the death penalty if found guilty. Her next court appearance is scheduled for July 28.

Authorities have confirmed that her three other children are now in the care of family members.

As questions mount and the legal case unfolds, one painful truth remains: a child is gone — and she should still be here.
