Nigeria’s Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in their World Cup qualifier at the Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein, on Tuesday.
The hosts struck first in the 24th minute when captain William Troost-Ekong diverted Nkota’s cross into his own net after a swift move from the South Africans.
Nigeria struggled to create chances early on, with Stanley Nwabali forced into a key save to keep the Eagles in the game. Ola Aina was later forced off with a hamstring injury, replaced by Bright Osayi-Samuel.
The equaliser came just before half-time, as Ademola Lookman picked out Moses Simon, who delivered a cross for Calvin Bassey to head home. Though replays suggested a possible handball, the referee allowed the goal to stand.
Both sides pushed for a winner in the second half, but defences held firm. The result leaves South Africa top of the group, while Nigeria continue their chase for qualification.
