In a tightly contested UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg, Atlético Madrid and Arsenal played out a 1-1 draw at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday. Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman was notably absent from the scoresheet as both sides fought hard for an advantage in the opening encounter of the tie.
Arsenal, contesting their second consecutive UCL semi-final for the first time in club history, were keen on making a strong start in Madrid, a city where Atlético had previously been unbeaten in six UCL knockout games against English teams (W3, D3).
Lookman, returning to the starting lineup after missing the last league match, was part of Diego Simeone’s side as they looked to assert themselves early. However, it was Arsenal who initially found themselves on the back foot. David Raya had to react quickly, parrying a curling shot from Julián Alvarez around the post early on.
Arsenal responded positively, with captain Martin Ødegaard seeing a dangerous strike blocked by Atlético’s Johnny Cardoso, before Noni Madueke fired wide from 25 yards. Despite this early pressure, Arsenal began to stamp their authority on the game, having previously won five of their last six UCL away games this campaign (D1). Their persistence paid off just before halftime when Dávid Hancko clumsily fouled Viktor Gyökeres in the box. The Swede stepped up to take the penalty and calmly slotted the ball past Jan Oblak to score his 19th goal of the season, giving Arsenal a crucial 1-0 lead at the break.
Atlético’s Response and Lookman’s Missed Opportunities
At the start of the second half, Atlético Madrid came out with renewed intensity. Alvarez had an early chance, firing a free-kick just wide of the post. Lookman, looking for a breakthrough, saw his close-range shot saved by Raya as the hosts continued to press.
Atlético were awarded a penalty of their own when Ben White was penalized for handball inside the box. Alvarez, calm under pressure, converted his penalty with precision, sending Raya the wrong way to equalize for Atlético.
With the momentum now in their favor, Atlético pushed for a second goal. In the 63rd minute, Antoine Griezmann came close with a deft chipped effort that struck the crossbar. However, Lookman and his teammates could not capitalize on their opportunities, as Raya made another smart stop to keep the game level. Lookman, in particular, failed to take full advantage of a few key moments, with some profligate finishing costing Atlético dearly.
Arsenal’s Close Call and VAR Controversy
The game seemed to take another dramatic turn when Arsenal were awarded a second penalty after Hancko was adjudged to have tripped Eberechi Eze inside the box. However, after a lengthy VAR review, the decision was overturned, leaving Atlético with a sense of frustration.
Despite this reprieve, Atlético Madrid struggled to regain their attacking rhythm in the final minutes, allowing Arsenal to hold firm and take a valuable draw back to North London. For the Gunners, the away result extends their unbeaten run in the competition, and they will return to the Emirates next week with a positive scoreline.
For Atlético Madrid, while the result wasn’t ideal, they can still travel to London with confidence, as they have historically progressed from six of their last seven semi-final appearances across all UEFA competitions.
