Nollywood in Shock: Nigeria Submits Zero Films for 2026 Oscars

In a stunning development, the Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) has confirmed that no Nollywood films will represent Nigeria at the 2026 Oscars.

According to a statement by NOSC Chairperson Stephanie Linus, although six movies were initially submitted for consideration, the majority of committee members voted to withhold any submission.

“Young filmmakers have made strides,” Linus admitted, “but there remains a deficit in creative and technical intentionality required to make our films truly competitive on the global stage.”

Her remarks have triggered backlash across Nollywood circles, with critics accusing the committee of gatekeeping and discouraging emerging talent. Some argue that even imperfect works deserve the chance to compete. Others support the move, saying it preserves the prestige of Nigeria’s international image.

Whichever side wins the debate, one fact is undeniable: the 2026 Oscars will see no Nigerian presence and that silence is already making waves
