Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says winning the Europa League is the only way to make the club’s tough season worthwhile.
United secured their place in the final after thrashing Athletic Club Bilbao 7-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals. The team sealed the win with a 4-1 victory in the second leg at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
Despite their European success, United are struggling in the Premier League, sitting in 15th place. They will now face 16th-placed Tottenham Hotspur in the final, set for May 21 in Bilbao, Spain. The winner will qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Amorim said: “We’re happy to reach the final, but if we don’t win it, then it all means nothing. It’s the least we can do for our fans after such a difficult season.”
The Portuguese coach admitted he’s under pressure. “I’m already stressed about the final,” he said. “I know we should be doing better in the league, but we’ve done well in Europe.”
Tottenham, who beat Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt 5-1 on aggregate, are also looking to rescue their season with silverware. Spurs have had the upper hand over United this year, winning all three meetings: twice in the Premier League and once in the League Cup.
Looking ahead to the final, Amorim added: “We need a full squad, stay focused, take our chances, and hope for a bit of luck. It’s tough for both me and Ange [Postecoglou], but only one of us will lift the trophy.”
The Europa League final promises to be a fierce battle between two struggling Premier League sides desperate for redemption.
