Victor Osimhen was the star of the night on Wednesday as he helped Galatasaray win the Turkish Cup and broke a long-standing goal record.
The Nigerian striker scored twice in the 3-0 win over Trabzonspor, taking his goal tally to 35 this season. This broke the previous record of 34 goals by Brazil’s Mario Jardel, set during the 2000/01 season.
Galatasaray started strong with a goal in the fifth minute by Baris Yilmaz, who finished off a smart pass from Yunus Akgun.
Osimhen got his first goal just after halftime with a powerful low shot from outside the box. His second came 17 minutes later — a quick turn inside the area followed by a curling shot into the top corner.
With 35 goals in 38 games, Osimhen has now moved ahead of Jardel on Galatasaray’s all-time foreign scorers list. Only seven other foreign players have scored more, with Romanian legend Gheorghe Hagi still on top with 72 goals.
Galatasaray now has a chance to win the Turkish league title on Sunday with a victory over Kayserispor. If they succeed, it will be their 25th league title and their fourth domestic double — the last one was in the 1998–99 season.
