Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is set to bring goalkeeper James Trafford back to the Etihad in a deal that could break the British transfer record for a shot-stopper.

The 22-year-old, who left City for Burnley two years ago in a £14 million transfer, is now on the verge of returning after City exercised their matching rights. Newcastle United had shown strong interest, prompting City to act fast.

Despite still having Ederson and Stefan Ortega, Trafford is expected to compete for the No.1 spot, especially with Ederson heading into the final year of his contract.

Last season, Trafford helped Burnley earn promotion to the Premier League, conceding just 16 goals and keeping 30 clean sheets — matching a 71-year-old EFL record. His standout performances also earned him a senior England call-up from manager Thomas Tuchel.

The total package for the transfer, including add-ons, could exceed £30 million, surpassing the record set by Jordan Pickford’s move to Everton.

An official announcement is expected soon.
