La Liga leaders Real Madrid were held to a goalless draw by Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, missing the chance to increase their lead at the top of the table. They remain five points clear for now.

It was a frustrating night for Xabi Alonso’s team, who managed only five shots on target as Rayo became the first club this season to stop the league leaders from scoring.

Despite having stars like Kylian Mbappe and Vinícius Júnior, Madrid struggled to create clear chances at the Estadio de Vallecas, where they have now failed to win in four straight seasons.

Rayo’s goalkeeper, Augusto Batalla, was the standout player, making key saves to deny Madrid and help his side earn a valuable point.

Mbappe, who leads the league with 13 goals, had a quiet game and managed just one shot as Madrid’s attack looked short of ideas.

The result gives Barcelona a chance to close the gap to three points when they play Celta Vigo later on Sunday. Rayo stay 12th with 15 points after another strong defensive performance.

Football analyst Kiyan Sobhani said Madrid’s struggles were down to poor positioning:
“When you need players in between the lines or in the box, they’re not there. When the ball is far away from those zones, they’re in those positions you needed them earlier. Positionally, this team has suffered regression.”

Although Madrid controlled possession, they failed to create real danger. Rayo’s Jorge De Frutos came close with a shot over the bar in the second half, while Madrid could not find a breakthrough.
