In one of the most unexpected moves in recent football history, Brazilian football icon Ronaldinho has officially come out of retirement to sign a contract with Italian third-tier side Ravenna FC at the age of 46. The former Ballon d’Or and 2002 FIFA World Cup winner has not played a competitive professional match since his brief stint with Fluminense concluded in 2015.
The club will formally showcase their historic new acquisition during a special presentation event scheduled for June 23 in Miami, where Ronaldinho is already staying. In addition to being registered as a player, the former Barcelona and AC Milan star is joining the club’s hierarchy as an official team shareholder.
“New colours, same smile. I cannot wait to dance with the ball and write a beautiful new story with Ignazio Cipriani and the Cipriani family. Football has always been joyful for me, and I’m excited to bring that spirit to Ravenna. Let the magic begin!” Ronaldinho said.
Marketing stunt or competitive return? Mixed messages surround playing role
Ravenna FC has been under the ownership of US-based Italian businessman Ignazio Cipriani since he completed a full takeover of the team in 2024. Cipriani, who described Ronaldinho as his childhood idol, orchestrated the monumental deal alongside club vice-president Ariedo Braida. Braida, a former AC Milan executive, shares a long-standing personal relationship with the Brazilian dating back to when he initially signed him for the Rossoneri in 2008.
While the signing has sent shockwaves through the football community, the exact nature of Ronaldinho’s responsibilities under head coach Andrea Mandorlini remains highly debated. The club’s management has offered contrasting statements regarding whether fans will actually see the legendary attacker grace the pitch in Serie C.
Initially, Vice-President Ariedo Braida dismissed the idea of a competitive return, stating firmly to local media that Ronaldinho was signed for a massive promotional campaign but would not physically participate in Serie C fixtures next season due to his age.
However, speaking shortly after to Italian news agency ANSA, Braida walked back his definitive stance and chose to leave the door open for a miraculous on-pitch appearance. He labeled Ronaldinho an “ageless and timeless champion,” confirming that while he will be fully registered to the squad, a final determination on his active playtime will be evaluated down the road.
