Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the last of his career.
The 41-year-old made the declaration ahead of Portugal’s Round of 16 clash against Spain, saying he is focused on enjoying what remains of the tournament.
“This will be my last World Cup, but let’s hope tomorrow isn’t my last game,” Ronaldo told reporters on Sunday.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner said he would walk away from international football with no regrets whenever the time comes.
“The day will come. But I’ll be honest: whatever happens tomorrow, Cristiano will leave with a clear conscience — 100%, no, 1,000%. Because I’ve given everything in football,” he said.
Ronaldo said his continued presence in the game is no longer about proving a point, but about passion.
“I don’t need it; I have a good life, but it’s about passion. I play football because I love it,” he said.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward has already scored three goals at the tournament.
He became the first player to score in six different World Cups after netting twice against Uzbekistan in the group stage.
He also scored from the penalty spot against Croatia in the Round of 32, registering his first World Cup knockout goal.
Ronaldo described the ongoing tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico as the most emotional World Cup of his career.
“It’s been fantastic. It goes beyond the pitch. This is the World Cup I’ll remember the most because of people’s passion,” he said.
Despite never winning the World Cup, Ronaldo insisted his legacy would not be reduced to one trophy.
“I’m not lacking anything in life. I’m not going to be more or less Cristiano because I win the World Cup. We have the qualities to win, but only one country can win it,” he said.
Ronaldo, who is under contract with Al-Nassr until 2027, said criticism has helped him grow throughout his long career.
“I’m thankful even for the attacks I receive. With the criticism, that’s how you grow the most as a person,” he said.
Portugal will face Spain for a place in the quarter-finals.
