Rooney: I have ‘no faith’ in Amorim as Manchester United struggles continue

Wayne Rooney says he has “no faith” in Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim and believes the “soul” has disappeared from the club he once starred for.

United lost 3-1 to Brentford on Saturday, continuing their poor start to the season. They have only managed two Premier League wins against Burnley and 10-man Chelsea and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in their first game by League Two side Grimsby.

Amorim, who insists his tactics are not the problem, guided United to 15th place last season despite heavy summer spending and a full pre-season.

Rooney, speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, said:

“It’s just not good enough, from the managers, the coaches, from the players. Ruben Amorim is still a young manager and I hope he can turn it around, but if you ask me if I believe he will, I have no faith in it. I don’t recognise the club anymore.”

The former United striker also criticised the players, saying they lacked fight, character and quality.

“I don’t see players fighting. I don’t see desire to win. Some don’t deserve to wear the shirt,” he said.

Rooney admitted he debated speaking out but felt he had to because of how much he cares about the club. He also urged the owners, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazers, to give clear direction.

“There needs to be a clear message on where the club is going. The soul has gone. It needs a new engine, a new lease of life.”

Amorim, however, said he is not worried about losing his job.

“I am always comfortable. I am not concerned, it is not my decision. I will do the best I can every minute I am here,” the Portuguese coach said after the defeat.

Despite the poor form, Ratcliffe is reported to still back Amorim, believing the manager needs more time to integrate his new signings after a £214m summer spend.
