Senegal began their African Nations Championship (CHAN) title defence with a narrow 1-0 win over Nigeria on Tuesday at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar.
Both teams looked evenly matched for most of the game until Senegal found the breakthrough in the 75th minute. Midfielder Serigne Koite won the ball on the edge of the box and set up Christian Gomis, who tapped in the winner.
In the group’s other game, Congo held Sudan to a 1-1 draw. Sudan took the lead in the 29th minute through Musa Ali Hussein, who dribbled past two defenders before firing into the net.
Congo hit back late, with substitute Carly Ekongo scoring in the 86th minute after a defensive mistake from Sudan.
