Sound Sultan was one of the first people who really supported her when she moved to Nigeria. She stayed with him and his wife in FESTAC for a whole year, and he helped introduce her to key players in the music scene. His passing hit her hard during Nigerian Idol filming, she says she lost the motivation to make music.
More painful: she missed the chance to see him before he died. They’d planned to meet in New York that weekend. Not being able to do so “tore her apart.” After his death, Seyi Shay also discovered she was pregnant, and decided she needed distance from the music industry for her mental health, her peace, and to protect her baby from the toxicity and scrutiny of the public eye.
Seyi’s story is a reminder that behind public success there are human hearts, losses, and healing.
