Colombian music superstar, Shakira, and Nigerian Grammy-winning singer, Burna Boy, have made World Cup history after their official tournament song, ‘Dai Dai’, crossed 100 million views just hours before the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off.
The song, released two weeks ago, has attracted massive global attention ahead of the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Shakira Extends World Cup Legacy
Shakira, 49, has now strengthened her status as one of the most successful music stars in World Cup history, having been involved in songs and performances across four editions of the tournament.
In 2006, she performed a remix of ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ in Germany before the final between Italy and France.
Four years later, she released ‘Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)’ for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The video has since recorded about 4.5 billion views, making it one of the most-watched music videos of all time.
In 2014, she released ‘La La La’ for the Brazil World Cup, with the video also crossing 1.3 billion views.
Burna Boy Joins Global World Cup Spotlight
With ‘Dai Dai’, Burna Boy becomes part of another major global football moment, adding Nigerian and African star power to the official World Cup music campaign.
The collaboration has drawn strong interest from fans across Africa and beyond, with the video expected to gain even more traction as the tournament begins.
Shakira Speaks On Football Connection
Speaking about her long relationship with football and the World Cup, Shakira said she has an unbreakable connection with the sport.
“I have this connection with football that seems unbreakable,” she said.
The singer described the World Cup as a magical tournament, saying the 2026 edition would help unite people at a sensitive time.
“Every World Cup is really magical, and I think this one is going to be all about bringing people together in this very sensitive moment in time, socially and politically,” she said.
‘Dai Dai’ Carries Message For Young Dreamers
Shakira said the new World Cup anthem was also designed to inspire young people who have been told their dreams are too big.
“It’s a message for every child who’s been told that their dream is too big,” she said.
“And to remind us that every champion started out as a kid who perhaps went through hardship and struggles, but there was someone that believed in them, and that’s why they didn’t give up.”
World Cup Final Half-Time Show
Apart from releasing the 2026 World Cup anthem with Burna Boy, Shakira is also expected to co-headline the tournament’s final half-time show on July 19 alongside Madonna and K-pop group BTS.
The 2026 World Cup is set to kick off on Thursday, with the opening match expected to draw huge global attention.
With ‘Dai Dai’ already crossing 100 million views before kick-off, Shakira and Burna Boy have given the tournament one of its first major cultural talking points.
