African champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Senegal in an international friendly match played on Friday at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne. The host team asserted their dominance right from the opening whistle, taking full control of the game’s tempo and possession from the first minute.
Despite their early dominance, the Super Falcons had to remain patient as they looked to break down a resilient Senegalese defensive line. The breakthrough finally arrived around the half-hour mark when former African Women’s Footballer of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, coolly stepped up and converted a penalty in the 32nd minute to open the scoring.
Payne doubles lead before second-half tactical changes
Nigeria capitalized on their momentum and successfully doubled their advantage just four minutes before the halftime interval. Everton midfielder Toni Payne found the back of the net, slotting the ball home superbly after latching onto a brilliant, defense-splitting pass from right-back Shukurat Oladipo. The lead could have been even wider before the break, but team captain Rasheedat Ajibade was denied by an impressive save from the Senegalese goalkeeper in the closing moments of the half.
The dynamic of the encounter shifted significantly after the restart. The overall tempo of the game slowed down considerably during the second half as Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu opted to heavily rotate his squad, making a number of tactical changes to evaluate his fringe players.
Despite the drop in tempo, Nigeria still carved out a few clear-cut opportunities to put the game completely out of reach. Oshoala and forward Folashade Ijamilusi had the hosts’ best chances of the second period but were unable to extend the lead.
Senegal refused to back down and managed to set up a tense finish. With just four minutes left on the clock, Sokhna Nogaye unleashed a spectacular, long-range effort that beat the Nigerian goalkeeper to reduce the deficit to 2-1. While the visitors ran out of time to find an equalizer, the late goal sets up an exciting second meeting between the two West African rivals, with Nigeria and Senegal scheduled to clash again in a second friendly match next week Monday, also at the Ikenne venue.
