Esther Okoronkwo scored a late winner as the Super Falcons secured a 2-1 victory over Tanzania in an international friendly match in Casablanca on Friday night.
The African champions got off to a flying start when team captain Rasheedat Ajibade broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, turning home an assist from Rinsola Babajide. Despite dominating possession and creating multiple chances, Nigeria were unable to extend their lead before the half-time whistle.
Second-half drama and late heroics
Head coach Justine Madugu made four tactical substitutions after the break, bringing on Folashade Ijamilusi, Uchenna Kanu, Michelle Alozie, and Joy Omewa in place of Glory Ogbonna, Toni Payne, Rinsola Babajide, and Asisat Oshoala.
Despite Nigeria’s continued dominance, Tanzania capitalized on an opportunity to equalize 11 minutes from time. However, Okoronkwo responded almost immediately, netting the decisive goal in the 89th minute to restore the Super Falcons’ lead and seal the win.
Final preparations for Rabat
Following the victory, the Super Falcons will travel to Rabat as they finalize preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The West African giants are set to begin their title defense next Tuesday when they face the Scorchers of Malawi at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat.
