Tears and pain as murdered wedding travelers are buried in Plateau

It was a heartbreaking scene in Plateau State as the remains of innocent travellers murdered on their way to a wedding were finally laid to rest.

The victims  men, women, and children — were journeying from Zaria in Kaduna State to Qua’an Pan Local Government Area for a wedding ceremony when tragedy struck. They were ambushed and attacked by unknown assailants in Mangun, a community in Mangu LGA. Some were killed on the spot, and others burned in a shocking act of violence that has left families and communities shattered.

The survivors, scarred and shaken, are currently receiving treatment in the hospital. Their stories are a grim reminder of the growing insecurity Nigerians face daily — even during moments meant for joy and celebration.

In an emotional farewell, the victims were buried at the Hayi Muslim Cemetery in Plateau State under heavy security. The decision to bury them there, according to religious leaders, was made by grieving families to avoid possible tensions back home in Kaduna.

At the burial, clerics pleaded with mourners to remain calm and trust in divine justice. "Let us not take the law into our hands," they urged, encouraging the community to mourn peacefully and pray for healing.

But the pain runs deep.

“How do we explain this to the children left behind? How do we erase this memory from the minds of the survivors?” one mourner asked, visibly shaking.

The senseless killing of wedding guests — people simply trying to celebrate love and family — has sparked outrage across social media. Many Nigerians have expressed frustration at the lack of security, swift justice, or meaningful government response.

In a country where community attacks and mob violence have become far too common, this is yet another blow to the nation's weary heart.

These victims had names, dreams, and families waiting for them at the wedding. Instead of dancing and rejoicing, loved ones now face unbearable grief.

As their graves were covered and final prayers said, one question lingered in the air: When will it end?
