President Bola Tinubu has asked the Commonwealth to give Africa its first chance to host the Games by awarding the 2030 Centenary edition to Nigeria.
Tinubu made the appeal on Wednesday in a post on his official X account, noting that in 100 years of the competition, no African country has ever hosted it.
“It is time for Africa. After 100 years of the Commonwealth Games, they have never been hosted on African soil,” Tinubu said.
He described Nigeria as “the gateway” and Africa as “the stage,” urging the Commonwealth to use the 2030 Games to show that every region of the bloc matters.
“By bringing the Commonwealth Centenary Games to Nigeria in 2030, you will send a powerful message that Africa is not only part of the story, but central to its future,” he added.
If Nigeria’s bid succeeds, it would be the first African country to host the Games since they began in 1930.
