Tobi Amusan wins fifth straight national 100m hurdles title in Lagos

Tobi Amusan has won her fifth consecutive national title in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2025 Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trials held at Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.

The world record holder finished strong with a time of 12.57 seconds, staying ahead of rising star Adaobi Tabugbo, who clocked 13.03 seconds. Faith Osamuyi came in third with 13.36 seconds.

Amusan’s win keeps her at the top of her event in Nigeria as she gets ready for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.

In the men’s 400m final, Gafar Badmus came first with a time of 45.71 seconds. He beat Ezekiel Asuquo (46.29s) and David Akhalu (46.91s) who finished second and third.

There was drama in the women’s 400m as veteran Patience Okon-George was disqualified. The disqualification gave African U-20 champion Favour Onyah a chance to shine. She won the race in 52.69 seconds. Opeyemi Deborah Oke came second while Anita Enaruna was third.

In the women’s 100m final, young sprinter Chioma Nweke surprised many by beating defending champion Olayinka Olajide. Nweke won with a time of 11.27 seconds, while Olajide came second in 11.39 seconds. Iyanuoluwa Bada placed third in 11.45 seconds.
