Inter Milan have made a late move to sign Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji on loan, just hours after Tottenham were reported to be close to sealing a deal.
Talks are ongoing between Inter and City, with Akanji open to joining the Italian club.
The 29-year-old had been linked strongly with Tottenham, with manager Ange Postecoglou identifying him as a top defensive target. Spurs were believed to be leading the race ahead of AC Milan and Crystal Palace.
Inter’s approach now sets up a battle between the two clubs as the transfer deadline approaches.
Chelsea, West Ham and Aston Villa are also active in the market, adding to the drama on deadline day.
